Dr. Kyle Cushing
Dr. Kyle Cushing is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Consulting Forensic Examiner. He was raised in Rockford and has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Iowa, a Master of Science degree in applied psychology from Jacksonville State University, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. His one year APA (American Psychological Association) accredited internship was completed through the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. He was also an intern psychologist for the Fort Worth Public School District. He then completed a one year post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before returning to Rockford where he has been in private practice since 1999.
Dr. Cushing has specialized training in forensic (court ordered) evaluations, childhood disorders (e.g., ADHD, learning disabilities, bipolar, etc.), addictions, and neuropsychological assessment. He has performed thousands of evaluations on children, adolescents, and adults for numerous referral sources. He regularly works in tandem with psychiatrists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, attorneys, and teachers to insure accurate diagnosis and specific treatment recommendations for his patients. He has hospital privileges at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Cushing's therapeutic approach is solution-based and focuses on how thoughts are highly associated with feelings and behavior. Understanding a person's life experiences through empathic listening often brings insight into an individual's thinking and behavior patterns. He works daily with patients who are suffering from depression, anxiety or general life stress. As such, individual, family, and couples counseling make up a substantial part of Dr. Cushing's practice.
Forensic Psychology Training/Experience:
Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Kyle Cushing worked and trained at the following facilities: Cook County Jail, Elgin Mental Health Center (Forensic Services), U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Cushing has completed two separate, one year post-doctoral fellowships; one through the Wisconsin Sex Offender Treatment Network and the other at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has specialized training in the assessment and treatment of all types of sex offenders and has performed hundreds of sex offender evaluations. In addition, his training at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry was directly supervised by the past president of the American Board of Forensic Psychology (Dr. Steven Bank) and earned him certification as a Consulting Forensic Examiner.
Dr. Cushing has performed hundreds of court-ordered evaluations, assessing issues such as:
Criminal
- Competency to Stand Trial
- Competency to Waive Miranda (i.e., Competency to Confess)
- Mental State at the Time of the Offense (i.e., Criminal Responsibility/Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity)
- Diminished Capacity (mens rea)
- Violence Risk Assessment
- Sexual Dangerousness
- Sex Offender Evaluation (treatment needs)
- Juvenile Waiver to Adult Court (i.e., trying a juvenile as an adult)
Civil
- Child Custody and/or 604(b) Evaluations
- Personal-Psychological Injury (e.g., PTSD)
- Psychological Autopsy
- Competency to Execute a Will or Testamentary Capacity
- Parenting Assessments/Guardianship
Lastly, Dr. Cushing has worked with prosecutors and defense attorneys in both the state and federal systems. He provides timely and well-written reports that specifically answer the questions of the court and/or attorney. His expert witness testimony is highly professional, easily understood by judges and juries, and based on well-researched clinical information as it relates to specific state or federal statutes.
